چکیده

The Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) is designed to gather the best and deepest multiwavelength data for studying the formation and evolution of galaxies and active galactic nuclei, the distribution of dark and luminous matter at high redshift, the cosmological parameters from distant supernovae, and the extragalactic background light. The program uses the most powerful space– and ground–based telescopes to cover two fields, each 10′×16′, centered on the Hubble Deep Field North and the Chandra Deep Field South, already the sites of extensive observations from X–ray through radio wavelengths. GOODS incorporates 3.6–24μm observations from a SIRTF Legacy Program, four–band ACS imaging from an HST Treasury Program, and extensive new ground–based imaging and spectroscopy. GOODS data products will be made available on a rapid time–scale, enabling community research on a wide variety of topics. Here we describe the project, emphasizing its application for studying the mass assembly history of galaxies.

The Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey

The Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) is a campaign to unite extremely deep, multiwavelength observations to create a public, legacy data set for exploring the distant universe. GOODS builds upon the deepest existing or forthcoming surveys by the other NASA Great Observatories, Hubble and Chandra, and ESA’s XMM-Newton, providing the most sensitive SIRTF observations at mid-infrare...

We report early results on galaxies at z ∼ 6, selected from Hubble Space Telescope imaging for the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey. Spectroscopy of one object with the Advanced Camera for Surveys grism and from the Keck and VLT observatories a shows a strong continuum break and asymmetric line emission, identified as Lyα at z = 5.83. We detect only five spatially extended, z ∼ 6 candida...

Search is Realized in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field Survey

The Hubble Ultra Deep Field Survey has not only provided the deepest optical and near infrared views of universe, but has enabled a search for the most distant supernovae to z ∼ 2.2. We have found four supernovae by searching spans of integrations of the Ultra Deep Field and the Ultra Deep Field Parallels taken with the Hubble Space Telescope paired with the Advanced Camera for Surveys and the ...

EXPANDING THE SEARCH FOR GALAXIES AT z ∼ 7 − 10 WITH NEW NICMOS PARALLEL FIELDS

We have carried out a search for galaxies at z ∼ 7 − 10 in ∼ 14.4 arcmin2 of new NICMOS parallel imaging taken in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS, 5.9 arcmin2), the Cosmic Origins Survey (COSMOS, 7.2 arcmin2), and SSA22 (1.3 arcmin2). These images reach 5 σ sensitivities of J110 = 26.0-27.5 (AB), and combined they increase the amount of deep near-infrared data by more than 60...
